Leading carriers are already taking initial steps to resolve their agility journey. Why aren’t you? Delivering intelligent capabilities in real-time is core to your agile strategy.

Our first blog, in a series of three, outlined the concept of ‘anti-agility’, whereby large, established Tier 1 carriers are often weighed down by a historically conservative mindset, legacy technology and outdated processes that gives them a competitive disadvantage. This second part considers how carriers can overcome their inertia by using flexible, cloud-enabled solutions and adding intelligence to their capabilities.

## Resolving ‘anti-agility’ with real-time intelligent capabilities

Many leading carriers are already taking steps to resolve their anti-agility with investment in virtualisation of network elements and the replacement of large monolithic systems for routing and rating. This is increasingly seen as key to long-term survival. So, what can you do to break free from the things that are holding you back?

Well, one step would be to capitalise on nimble, flexible cloud-based solutions, such as those provided by Digitalk. We’re focused solely on providing the services to carriers that allows telecoms operators to address today’s dynamic market environment.

Key to this are integrated business support systems that can handle almost any eventuality, near-infinite scale and a forward-thinking mindset that allows them to respond swiftly, from both a market and technology perspective, to changes in business requirements. It’s the exact opposite of many carriers, with hundreds fighting to terminate international calls in as cost-effective a way as possible, while maintaining margins.

Today, there is a unique mix of old and new. Large carriers would like to tie down certain arrangements to support a steady stream of revenue (using complex commitments and swap deals for example), while at the same time, fighting ferociously for the “undecided” traffic that is being routed purely on a price/quality basis.

## The balance between maintaining margins and targeting new markets

How can carriers balance these two distinct objectives? Real time is key. Real-time visibility of traffic is crucial to maximizing revenue and margins. This real-time intelligence is no longer ‘nice to have’, it’s ‘must have’. The ability to access intelligence and management capabilities in real or near real-time is core to an agile strategy, and not something that most legacy systems can support.

As well as enabling carriers to track marginal market price changes, and hence maximise margins, intelligent capabilities allow them to interact with customers in an agile way helping to improve customer experience.

This also has the added benefit of allowing carriers to address new segments of the market, bringing new untapped revenue and savings with minimal risk and resources.

Now is definitely the time to establish a longer-term plan for the evolution of networks and systems underpinning the agility of the international telecoms environment. A decision by a large wholesaler to scrap years of investment in networks and systems may be impractical, but so is continuing to feed millions of dollars or euros into amending, supporting and trying to squeeze new features into the existing stacks.

Getting from anti-agile to a fully agile stance is not an overnight miracle, but without taking the first steps, it will be a long march. Carriers that adopt these agile technologies into their core network can reap the benefits of the strong relationship between real-time data and the decisions needed to accurately and effectively route each call.
